Fourth Interlude

I could feel myself sweating as I stared at the screen. It felt like I was right back in that house, going into battle against the Daleks with poor old Kemel. I thought of all that was to come, and felt a strange mixture of pride, loss and sadness.

‘You look to have written yourself out of the story, Doctor,’ said Zoe.

‘Oh, I was there, as you saw. Busy with a different kind of chronicling,’ the Doctor said. ‘The genetic coding for Jamie’s behaviour told a story all of its own. Bravery, instinct, courage, compassion.’ He smiled at me a little sadly. ‘The human factor.’

Zoe shivered. ‘And you took it down like a recipe ready to feed to the Daleks.’

‘Hey, the Doctor had no choice,’ I said. I was surprised to find myself feeling defensive on his behalf. Hadn’t I been grumbling at him myself?

‘Now, now, Jamie. Zoe is entitled to be concerned,’ the Doctor said. ‘If she’s to come with us, it’s important she knows just how deadly serious our adventures can become. There are times when even the best course of action can have terrible consequences.’

‘I understand,’ Zoe said.

‘Perhaps not entirely.’ The Doctor gave me a wee look. ‘At least, not yet.’ He stretched. ‘At this point in the story, I could use some refreshment. I’ll just fetch us all some water and a sandwich or two.’ He walked over to the control room’s inner door. ‘Won’t be long.’

The door closed behind him. I saw Zoe looking at me. Alone with her, I felt my cheeks prickle.

‘You must have been very afraid,’ she said softly. ‘Risking your life in a time that wasn’t yours for people you didn’t know. And the only person you did know acting in a way you didn’t understand.’

‘Aye, well. I didn’t much like having to go it alone without the Doctor,’ I admitted. ‘He’s normally the one with the plans, however harebrained they might seem.’

‘You had to go it alone when he got knocked out aboard that rocket too,’ she reminded me. ‘And five minutes later you were sabotaging the Wheel’s only means of defence to stop us destroying it. Putting yourself in a great deal of trouble just to protect this TARDIS! Seems you and the Doctor both do what you must to keep it safe … whatever the consequences.’

I shrugged. ‘Well, of course. It’s the only home we have. You’ve got your own world, Zoe, on the Wheel. One place and time. But us …’

‘Well, I’ve never truly felt like I quite belonged anywhere,’ Zoe admitted. ‘But clearly you took Victoria with you, so the story must have a happy ending …’

I looked away.

‘Really, Jamie. I’m not looking to replace anyone,’ said Zoe gently. ‘But I do think we might make a good team …’

She was right, of course. We’d survived a spacewalk through a storm of shooting stars, and we’d braved the Cybermen, working together. But there again, she seemed just as brainy as the Doctor. That could be … a challenge at times, and I’d already had a taste of how Zoe could be on the Wheel.
